Question
Address the following prompts about random samples:
First, (1-a) give a concrete example of a research question in which you obtained a truly random sample. (1-b) Explain why, in this case, your sample could be considered “truly random.”
Second, (2-a) give a concrete example of a research question in which you did NOT obtain a truly random sample, yet your conclusion based on that sample would be meaningful and not misleading. (2-b) Explain why, in this case, your conclusion would be meaningful.
Finally, (3-a) give a concrete example of a research question in which you did NOT obtain a truly random sample, and this would cause your conclusion based on these results to be misleading or meaningless. (3-b) Explain why, in this case, your conclusion would not be meaningful.
Explanation / Answer
1) a) Is the mean amount that college student sleep at least as much as minimum 7 hours recommended for adults.
The students for this research are sampled in a randomized survey, so the amounts they sleep are likely to be mutially independent.
2) b) Is the mean amount of concentration of insectide mirex in 150 farmed salmon is greater than the standard insectide mirex.
Here, fish were not a random sample because no simple population existed to sample from. But they were raised in many different places, and samples were purchased independently from several sources, so they were likely to be independent and to represent the farmed Salmon world wide.
3) a) Is the mean age of cataract operation is 70 years.
Here, person sampled is not truly random, as no simple population exists to sample from. Person might develop cataract with age or might be out of other complication in eye from previous operation. Again operation of cataract varies from person to person with degree of severity.
b) The conclusion, throughs support of claim will be misleading because, randomization of experiment is not followed, so result cannot be generalized. Extenal validity is not checked.
