Question

6 13 In an assembly plant, muatenial handling between departments is performed using au directional ckosed loop conveyor. The figure below shows the layout for the midiu PID#3 Conveyor flow PIDS faclly, which consists of three equal-sized assembly modules (A, B and C), one admin- strative module (D), and one warehouse module P/D points for each module are aso shown in the figure. The administrative and warehouse activities are not to be moved however, assembly areas A. B, C can be relocated The distance between P/D points and the number of pallet koads moved between depatments are given below. Distance between P/Ds Pallet flow per day From P/DI P/D2 P/D3 P/D4 P/DS To P/D 2 P/D 3 P/D 4 P/D 5 P/D 1 Distance 60 ft. 90 ft 30 ft 90 ft 60 ft From To A BCDE 0 5030 B 10 25 0o C 25 500 D O 0OO 5 20 5 0 0 Using the pairwise exchange method, determine new locations for assembly modules A B, and C that minimizes the sum of the products of pallet flows and conveyor travel

Explanation / Answer

Conditions: D & E not to be moved.

So the posible pairs with the direction of flow are (a,d),(d,c),(c,e),(e,b),(b,a)

For (a->b),(b->c),(c->a)

Sum of the products of pallet flows= 0+25+25=50 and

conveyor travel distance=60+90+30+90+60+60+60+30+90+60+60+90=780

For (a->c)(b->a)(c->b)

Sum of the products of pallet flows= 5+10+5=20

conveyor travel distance=30+90+90+60+60=330

for a,(b<->c)

Sum of the products of pallet flows= 0+25+5=30

conveyor travel distance=90+30+90=210

For b,(a<->c)

Sum of the products of pallet flows= 5+0+25=30

conveyor travel distance=30+90+90+60+60=330

For c, (b<->a)

Sum of the products of pallet flows= 10+0+0=10

conveyor travel distance=30+90+90+60+60=330

from the above,

Sum of the products of pallet flows is least when c is unchanged & (b<->a),

Conveyor travel distance is least when a is unchanged & (b<->c).

So if we want a reduced travel distance exchange b and c and if we want to reduce sum of products of pallet flow exchange a and b modules.

If every module (A,B,C) has to be change to create a new assemble module then (a->c)(b->a)(c->b) is the better option with lower travel distance and sum of products of pallet flow exchange.
