Question
1. Tolo Harbour is an embayment to the northeast of Hong Kong and connects with the outer open bay (Mirs Bay) by a narrow channel. Because of the bottle-necked topography, the flushing rate is poor. On the other hand, the inner Harbour receives a large amount of untreated sewage from towns along the coastline. A study was undertaken from November 1978 to October 1980 to investigate the effect of organic pollution on the benthic community of Tolo Harbour and Tolo Channel, Hong Kong. The locations of the five sampling stations are shown in Figure . At each sampling station, seven replicate trawl samples were collected at monthly intervals by a conventional beam trawl. Trawling time was 5 minutes per replicate and the sampling area was between 1000 to 1200 m3. Figure 2 and 3 show temporal changes in mean number of animals and mean number of species per trawl sample, respectively from Station 1. a. The temporal changes in the number of species per haul from the station 1 in the first month goes on increasing and remains same for two samples and reaches a maximum value of around 260 and then decreases and reach almost zero.In the next month almost remains zero for all the seven samples and in the next month it reaches around 40 for the first sample and then it abruptly increases to 200 for the next sample and then decreases to almost 70 for the third sample and then it reaches almost zero for the remaining samples.
b.Temporal changes in the number of species per haul in the figure 1 for the first month starts at around 20 and goes on increasing and remains constant for the two values and then reaches a maximum value and then decreases slightly and for the second month it is not in a proper order that is it increases first and then decreases for the next samples and then remains same for the last samples it increases for four samples and then decreases for the remaining samples and reaches almost zero.
c.In both a and b temporal changes in the second month has highest value among all the three months and second month has almost zero and first month has moderate values.
d.Consider a given point and draw a horizaontal line from the point to the left gives H' value and drawing a horizontal to the gives J value.
e.Increasong organic pollution has variuos effects on the Tolo Harbour and Tolo Channnel that is overall mean values remain constant for more pollution and decreases for less pollution.
