using the data from question #3 and the range rule of thumb, determine if any of the data values would be considered "unusual." Why or why not? 4, 5. Use the coefficient of variation to determine which is more variable; amount of snow fall in Pittsburgh in the month of January, or temperature in Pittsburgh in the month of January. Mean snow fall 20.8 inches Mean temperature 21.4 degrees s 6.4 degrees s 3.9 inches 6. The body temperatures of healthy adults are normally distributed with a mean of 98.2 degrees and a standard deviation of 0.62 degrees. Using the empirical rule, what is the approximate percentage of adults with body temperatures: Within 1 standard deviation of the mean, or between 97.58 and 98.82 degrees? Between 96.34 and 100.06 degrees? a. b.
Explanation / Answer
4. Cant solve 4 as it is dependent on 3
5. COV of snow fall - sigma/mu = 20.8/3.9 = 5.3333
COV of temp = sigma/mu = 21.4/6.4 = 3.344
Since COV of snow fall is much more than COV of temperature we conclude that snow fall is
more variable
6. Mean = 98.2, Stdev = .62
a. P(-1<Z<1) = .68 or 68% of adults
b. P(96.34<X<100.06) = P(96.34-98.2/.62 <Z<100.06-98.2/.62) = P(-3<Z<3) = .997 i.e. 99.7% of adults
