Question Help The acidity or alkalinity of a solution is measured using pH. A phH less than 7 is acidic; a pH greater than 7 is alkaline. The accompanying data represent the ph in samples of bottled water and tap water. Complete parts (a) and (b) click the icon to view the data table (a) Compute the mean, median, and mode pH for each type of water in table (a) onty For tap water, the mean pH is(Round to the nearest thousandth as needed) Data Table Full data set 7.64 7.45 7.47 7.50 768 7.69 Tap 7.45 722 756 747 752 747 515 509 526 520 490 523 Bottled 5.52 526 5.13 526 521 524 7.64 7.45 7.47 7.50 7.68 769 ap 7.45 2.72 756 7.47 752 747 5.15 5.09 5.26 5.20 4.90523 552 526 5.13 5.26 5.21 524 Bottled Print Done Enter your answer in the answer box and then click Check Answer Check Answer Clear All 6:38 PM 9/28/2017 diExplanation / Answer
Mean can be calculated from n different observations as (Sum of all observations)/(Total number of observations). Therefore the sum of all observations from the table a is 90.12 and the total number of observations are 12. So the mean of the observations is 90.12/12 which equals 7.51.
The median can be obtained by arranging the series in increasing order and then finding the middle term. In case of even number of terms there are 2 middle terms and the median is the average of these terms. When the series is arranged in increasing order the series is
7.22, 7.45, 7.45, 7.47, 7.47, 7.47, 7.50, 7.52, 7.56, 7.64, 7.68, 7.69
The middle terms are 7.47 and 7.50 and the average of these terms is 7.485. Hence the median is 7.485.
The mode is the number which is repeated maximum number of times in the series and the number which is repeated maximum number of times in the series is 7.47 (3 times).
All these results are calculated for tap water in table a.
For bottled water following similar approach the sum of all observations is 62.45 and total number of observations are 12. hence mean equals 62.45/12 which equals 5.204166. The rest of the parts can be solved similarly.
