The reason rationalized fractions are in lower terms is because, before we had calculators, it was easier to do the long division for a rationalized fraction, then it was to do the long division for a non-rationalized fraction. I feel like whenever we learn anything type of math problem containing fractions it was always reiterated several times that the fractions needed to be simplified. This helps so that answers are consistent (as long as they are correct) when teachers are grading assignments when reading recipes, reading measurements, etc. reply to this discussion?

Discussion is correct. Rationalised fractions are in lower terms because it helps us to reduce the number of steps that is required for calculation such as division. it is easy to deal lower number than the big numbers. It is always advised to cancel out the common factors that is present in both numerator and denomenator. so that the fraction reduced to its lowest form.
