Question

My two sisters pooled thier savings and decided to go on a shopping spree at the mall one weekend. They started off at Macy's, each buying a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, spending $50 each. Next they went to the shoe store and my older sister bought a pair of shoes for $66, while my younger sister spent $47 on her shoes. My older sister wanted makeup, so she bought $27 worth of makeup. They were hungry so they spend 1/4 of what they had left on a nice lunch. After lunch they went to buy CDs. They then spent half of what they had left on a necklace for my mother. On the way home they bought gas for $20. When they got home with their things, they split the remaining amount of money and each ended up with $6. How much did they spend?

Explanation / Answer

Ans:

Let, the sisters have x dollars initially

sisters spends $50 each to buy a pair of jeans & tshirt, Thus the equation will be

x - 100    { 50 + 50 = 100}

Now, the sisters spents $66 & $47 respectively on shoes, Thus the equation becomes

   x - 100 - 113 { 66 + 47 = 113}

After that they spent $27 on makeup, Thus the equation becomes

   x - 100 - 113 - 27

After this, they spend 1/4 of what they had left on a nice lunch, Now, equation will becomes

   (x - 100 - 113 - 27) / 4

After that, they then spent half of what they had left on a necklace for my mother, Now, the equation changes to:

   => (x - 100 - 113 - 27) / 4*2

=> (x - 100 - 113 - 27) / 8

On the way home they bought gas for $20, Thus,

  (x - 100 - 113 - 27) / 8 - 20

In the end, they got home with their things, they split the remaining amount of money and each ended up with $6, i.e. a total of $12 . This clearly indicates that

  (x - 100 - 113 - 27) / 8 - 20 = 12

On solving this, we get,

   (x - 240 - 160)/8 = 12

      => x - 400 = 96

   =>    x = 496 Ans.
