Question

Is there a relationship between income category and the fraction of families with more than two children? Use the following data: Is there a relationship between income category and the fraction of families with more than two children? State the null and alternative hypothesis. State the observed values. State the expected values. Give a conclusion for the confidence Interval test. Regression and Correlation The ages and weights of guests at a wedding are given below: age = 43, 45, 50, 53, 58, 60 weights = 120, 130, 132, 138, 140, 145 Use regression analysis to look at the relationship between the ages and weights: a) Make a scatter diagram. b) Give The correlation coefficient. c) Give The regression equation. d) Draw the regression line on the scatter diagram. e) Predict the weight of a 48 year old teenager. f) Predict the age of a guest who weighs 135.

Explanation / Answer

Q.6 (a) null Hypothesis : H0 : The number of children any couple have is independent of the salary they draw.

Alternative Hyothesis : Ha : The number of children any couple have is dependent of the salary they draw.

(b) The observed Table

(c) The expected Table

I wil explain how to derive expected value. It is calculated by

(i) For Two or less and salary under $ 10000 = 79 * 45/ 150 = 23.7

similarly we can calulated other values

(d) Value of chi - square X2 = (Oi - Ei)2 /Ei = 32.6362

so for dF = 2 and alpha = 0.05 and X2 critical = 5.991

so we can reject the null hypothesis and can claim that the number of children any couple have is dependent of the salary they draw.

Number of children Salary under $10000 salary between $10000 - $ 25000 salary over $ 25000 Total Two or less 11 13 21 45 More than 2 68 28 9 105 Total 79 41 30 150
