Question
A group of 9 people chipped in for a gift. Denise purchased the gift and found that its cost was less then expected. To calculate everyone's refund, Denise was suppose to subtract 3 from the amount collected to cover shipping and then divide the result by 9. instead, she subtracted the 9 and divided the result by 3 which gave her an answer of 43. She realized that she made a mistake and did the calculation the correct way.
How much will everyone get back (I.e. What was her answer when she did the problem correctly)?
Explanation / Answer
Let the total amount to be refunded be x
When Wrongly calculated :
(x-9)/3 = 43
x-9 = 43*3 = 129
x = 120
When Correctly calculation :
(x-3)/9
where x=120
(120-3)/9 = 117/9 = 13
So, when correct calculation is done, everyone will get $13
