In a positive feedback loop the output is enhanced or amplified so that the controlled variable moves continuously in a direction of initial change. This can be compared with the activity of heat generated by furnace triggering the thermostat to produce more heat output from the furnace and to raise the room temperature continuously.

In our body mostly the homeostatic systems are worked on negative feedback loop but in some instances, positive feedback loop is necessary. The effectiveness of negative feedback loop is enhanced by the positive feedback mechanism. This is because the amplification of an action by positive feedback triggers negative feedback response.

For example, blood clotting is a sequential process accomplished by activation of clotting factors. The activation of clotting factors in turn activates several factors in a positive feedback cascade. The single change amplifies resulting in blood clot. The formation of clot prevents further loss of blood and results in completion of negative feedback loop restoring homeostasis.
