Question

for x 5. Set up the following application problem and don't forget to DECLARE your variable. Solve the application and state your solution (rounded to 2 decimal place accuracy). Calvin Culus has just arrived in Chicago's O'Hare Airport for the annual TI Calculator conference. The moving sidewalk at O'Hare moves at a speed of 2 ft/sec. As Cal walks on the sidewalk he notices that he can travel 110 feet with the sidewalk in the same time that it would take him to travel 80 feet against the sidewalk (the opposite direction). Find is Cal's normal walking speed.

Explanation / Answer

speed of moving sidewalk = 2ft/ sec

let w = normal walking speed

setting up the equation

110/ w+ 2 = 80 / w - 2

cross multiplying

110 ( w- 2) = 80 ( w+2)

110w - 220 = 80 w + 160

w = 38/3

Cal's normal walking speed = 12.67 feet / sec
