Question
How can I determine the range and domain of a function? For example, if the domain of a graphed function is (-3,2) and the range is (5,-4) I seem to be getting confused when using brackets or parentheses, how do I know when to use a bracket for the ordered pair and when to use parentheses?
I've posted screenshots of the question below, why is the pair (-3, 2) written with parentheses? but the pair for the range [-4, 5 ) is written with a bracket? Please help! Something so simple yet I keep getting it wrong!
UPDATE: See, not sure what I'm doing wrong!
QUESTION The entire graph of the function h is shown in the figure below. Write the domain and range of h using interval notation. -5 4Explanation / Answer
In the domain there is a round circle on coordinates of x axis i.e -3 and 2 that mean they are excluded from the domain region. So,when the points are excluded we put the paranthesis ( ),therefore for domain we use (-3,2)
For the range check the coordinates of y-axis i.e 5 & -4 but 5 is exluded that is graph didn't reach the value of 5. Since -4 is included in the graph we use bracket [ ] sign to show the included coordinate. therefore for range we use [-4,5).
