Question

A two-year study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a novel brief therapy program in reducing suicidal behavior in people who had recently attempted suicide. Patients who had recently attempted suicide were randomly allocated to treatment as usual “control” (n= 60) or treatment as usual 8 plus therapy (n = 60). The therapy group participants received three therapy sessions followed by regular contact through personalized letters over 24 months. [This was a real study.] The data from the study are given in the following table:

a.Is this an experimental or observational study?

b. What are the proportions of patients who attempted suicide in the control group, and in the treatment group, respectively?

c. Calculate the odds-ratio for a suicide attempt, comparing the control group to the treatment group.

d. Calculate a 95 % confidence interval for the odds ratio obtained in part (c).

e. Does this confidence interval indicate that the type of treatment is associated with future suicide attempts? If so, did the patients in the treatment group have higher or lower occurrence of further suicide attempts?

f. Does the conclusion in part (e) indicate that the rates of suicide attempts differ for the two groups or that the rates are not significantly different?

Sucide Attempt No Suicide Attempt Totals Control 16 44 60 Therapy 5 55 60 Totals 21 99 120
