Extracurricular Activities and Their Effect on the Student's Grade Point Average: Statistical Study

Bakoban, R. A.; Aljarallah, S. A.

Educational Research and Reviews, v10 n20 p2737-2744 Oct 2015

Extracurricular activities (ECA) are part of students' everyday life; they play important roles in students' lives. Few studies have addressed the question of how student engagements to ECA affect student's grade point average (GPA). This research was conducted to know whether the students' grade point average in King Abdulaziz University, Faisaliah campus is affected by their participation in the ECA. This study also studied the students' satisfaction on ECA. The study sample includes 239 students chosen via simple random sampling method. The study used inferential statistics to analyze this study design. To achieve the purpose of this study, a questionnaire (comprising 19 questions) was designed. The results showed that participation in ECA affects the students' GPA in a positive way. The study found that those who participated in ECA have higher GPA than those who did not; the study also found that the time spent participating in ECA did not affect the time students usually spend on studying (the result showed there wasn't any relationship between them). Furthermore, the study showed that students, based on faculty, are generally satisfied with the available extracurricular activities in the campus.

I need to critique article (Extracurricular Activities and their effect on the students grade point average: statistical study) and answer this questions.

1. Introduction to paper

2. For this article describe problem researcher is examining.

3. What is the hypothesis for this article? For this article explain the null and alternative hypothesis.

4. What are the independent and dependent variablesfor this article?

5. What is the internal validity in the study for this article?

6. What was the composition of the sample selected for this article.

7. What type of study is it, observational, experimental, ect for this article? Explain why.

8. What type of statistics was used in study, what are the results for this article?

9. Where the results significant, at what level significant for this article?

10. What implications do the results have in this article? What type of external validity was found in study in this article ?

Explanation / Answer

Answer (1)

In competitive environment students, have to focus in extracurricular activities along with grade point average. For their personal as well as professional improvement, students are actively involved in ECA and GPA. Given paper describes the relation and effect of ECA on students grade point average.

Answer (2)

Here the problem researcher is examining that is there any effect of students extracurricular activities to their grade point average (GPA).

Researcher also examine that Is there stretched time schedule to give focus in both the activities. In addition, is there students and faculty are satisfies with these activity.

Answer (3)

Hypothesis of this article are

Null Hypothesis: The reviews received from 239 students are same as of remaining all students

Alternative Hypothesis: The reviews received from 239 students are differs with remaining all students

Answer (4)

Dependant Variable: Extracurricular activity, Grade Point Average

Independent Variable: No of students, Time

Answer (5)

Hare researcher has taken random sampling method so internal validity is High

Answer (6)

239 students extracurricular activity time and their GPA is the sample composition

Answer (7)

This is an observational type study because researcher has observed data which is already happened or completed. They have not taken any experiments for this.

Answer (8)

Descriptive type statistic was used in this study. Result is students participate in ECA have higher GPA than those who did not participate. Students and Faculty is satisfied with this activity

Answer (9)

The results are significant if collage wants to rank higher than their peer competitors then they have to focus on ECA as well as GPA of student

Answer (10)

Results clearly shows that if students take participate in ECA then their GPA is not getting worse but it is better than earlier one. As discussed earlier in answer no 5 sample data was taken in random basis so it’s external validity is very low.
