Question
Determine side effects of new anti-hypertensive medication include insomnia. Insomnia is defined as 4.5 hours of sleep per night or less. A random sample of 65 patients treated with the drug is gathered and they measure the average number of hours of sleep per night. They calculate a one sided z test to determine whether the mean number of hours of sleep per night in the sample is greater than 4.5. The alpha is set at 0.05. The following result is found: z= 15.4 p < .0001. Provide an interpretation of the result. State the null and alternative hypothesis and whether you would reject or accept the null. Draw a conclusion about the association between the medication and insomnia
Explanation / Answer
H0: mu <=4.5 (mean hours of sleep is atmost 4.5 hours)
H1:mu>4.5 (mean hour sof sleep is more than 4.5 hours).
The p value is less than assumed significance level, alpha=0.05. Therefore, reject null hypothesis. There is sufficient sample evidence to conclude that mean hour sof sleep is more than with the drug. Association among medication and drug is not fully supported through this study, as there might exist confounding variable affecting the increase in sleep. To avoid the confounding, mor esystematic sampling with higher sample size has to be taken.
