Question
Suppose that a researcher was interested in learning whether artificial sweeteners produced negative health effects in laboratory rats. In a study, one group of rats was fed a liquid containing an artificial sweetener every day for 2 months. The daily amount of sweetener consumed was roughly equivalent to a human consuming 24 cans of diet pop each day. A control group was fed a liquid sweetened with ordinary sugar over the same 2 months (equivalent to a human consumption of about 2 cans of sugar-sweetened pop each day).
After 6 months, more rats in the artificial sweetener group developed bladder tumours compared to the regular sugar control group. The difference was statistically significant (p<.05).
Is this statistical finding alone sufficient evidence to conclude that artificial sweeteners should be banned? Why or why not?
Explanation / Answer
AS GIVEN THAT THE EXPERIMENT IS STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT THAT THE ARTIFICIAL SWEETENER GROUP DEVELOPED BLADDER TUMOURS WHEN COMPARING TO THE SUGER CONTROL GROUP THEN THE ARTIFICIAL SWEETNERS SHOULD BE BANNED AS THE RESULT IS STATISTICALLY PROVEN.
THE ONLY CONCERN THAT IN THE ARTIFICIAL SWEETENER THEY ARE PROVIDING WITH 24 DIET POP AMOUNT OF SUGAR WHICH IS NOT CONSUMED BY THE HUMAN ON DAILY BASIS.
OTHER INFERENCE CAN BE THAT THE HIGH AMOUNT OF DIIE POP SHOULD BE REFRAINED FROM DRINKING.
