Question
Saturn has five satellites that rotate around the planet. The magazine Astronomy lists different events involving occultations of Saturnian of Saturnian satellites during the month of August. The percentage of light lost by the occulted satellite at mid event is recorded as follows: 1,2,9,5,5,4,13,11,3,22,8,6. Answer the following parts by using a faculty standard calculator. Based on the above observations, find the mean, the median, and the standard deviation of percentage of light lost by the occulted satellite. Calculate the first quartile, the third quartile and the inter-quartile range. Are there any outliers? If so, give the value for each outlier. Justify your answer.Explanation / Answer
This we can done by using TI_83 calculator.
steps :
STAT --> ENTER --> Enter all the data values in L1 --> STAT --> CALC --> 1:1-Var Stats --> ENTER --> ENTER
mean = xbar = 7.4167
median = med = 5.5
standard deviation = Sx = 5.8381
First quartile = Q1 = 3.5
Third quartile = Q3 = 10
Inter quartile range = IQR = Q3 - Q1 = 6.5
The points below Q1 - 1.5*IQR and above Q3 + 1.5*IQR are outliers.
Q1 - 1.5*IQR = 3.5 - 1.5*6.5 = -6.25
Q3 + 1.5*IQR = 10 + 1.5*6.5 = 19.75
That is points below -6.25 and above 19.75 are outliers.
There is one point which is above 19.75 and that point is 22.
So 22 is outlier.
