Question
Survey Methods were reported near the end of the report. Figure 3 provides these results.
Figure 3: Results for this poll are based on telephone interviews conducted Jan. 1-31, 2016, with a random sample of 7,215 U.S. adults employed full or part time for an employer, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. For results based on the total sample of employed adults, the margin of sampling error is ±1.8 percentage points at the 95% confidence level. The sample of national adults includes a minimum quota used random-digit-dialing to reach landline and cellular telephone numbers.
Determination of whether a respondent was considered “engaged” was based on responses to several questions asked during the interview—such as having an opportunity to do what they do best each day, having someone at work who encourages their development and believing their opinions count at work. In addition to “Engaged, respondents could be classified as "Not Engaged" (51.9%) or “Actively Disengaged” (15.7%).
4a) Based on the description of the survey methods, list characteristics of the members of the Sampling Frame.
4b) Identity a specific potential Sampling Frame that could have been used. Remember that the Sampling Frame should identify everyone that has the potential to be selected for the sample.
5a) Identify groups of individuals that are part of the population that you identified in your response to Question 1 but that would not be included in the Sampling Frame that you identified in 4b.
5b) Identify groups of individuals that would not be part of the population that you identified in your response to Question 1, but that would be included in the Sampling Frame that you identified in 4b.
6. What does the 7215 in the survey results part of the article represent? (the size of the Sampling Frame, the number selected to be contacted, the number reached, the number who actually responded, something else that you can describe….) Justify your answer based on the information provided.
7. As noted in Figure 3, the article reported: “The margin of error is ± 1.8 points (percent) at a 95% confidence level.” This information assumes that the only variation that needs to be considered is due to sampling error. Non-sampling error includes any mistakes that could happen even if you were to attempt to collect data on every member of the Sampling Frame. Non-response is one of many potential sources of non-sampling error. Identify two additional sources of non-sampling error specific to this situation. These additional sources should not be examples of non-response. Be sure that you illustrate how your responses relate to this situation.
8. Based on the analysis of how the study was likely to have been conducted, provide new language for Figure 1 that more honestly (ethically) summarizes the results. Assume the audience for the report is the general public.
Explanation / Answer
Determination of whether a respondent was considered “engaged” was based on responses to several questions asked during the interview—such as having an opportunity to do what they do best each day, having someone at work who encourages their development and believing their opinions count at work. In addition to “Engaged, respondents could be classified as "Not Engaged" (51.9%) or “Actively Disengaged” (15.7%).
4a) Based on the description of the survey methods, list characteristics of the members of the Sampling Frame.
sampling frame : not enganed, actively disengaged and engaged
4b) Identity a specific potential Sampling Frame that could have been used. Remember that the Sampling Frame should identify everyone that has the potential to be selected for the sample.
Engaged, respondents could be classified as "Not Engaged" (51.9%) or “Actively Disengaged” (15.7%).
