Question
1) In 1978, cars that got fuel mileage of 40 miles per gallon (mpg) were available in the US. If the average fuel economy of all passenger vehicles sold since 1978 was 40 mpg, instead of the lower average mpg of vehicles actually sold, how many billion gallons of gasoline would have been saved in the US?
2) The Eco-Marathon is an annual competition sponsored by Shell Oil with events held in several locations around the world. Participants build special vehicles to achieve the highest possible fuel efficiency.
a) A French team, Microjoule, has won the annual competition 21 times. In 2009, they set the all-time Shell Eco-Marathon record of driving 3,771 km on 1 liter of fuel.
Calculate the fuel mileage, in miles per gallon, for the 2009 record.
b) Assuming the fuel has a density between 0.71 to 0.77 kg / liter, how far would this vehicle travel on 100 g of fuel. Express your answer in km and miles.
Explanation / Answer
There is a plenty of info missing in the first part.
So lets assume that in the US x number of cars have been sold
and each car had given a mileage of y mpg and each car on an average travelled a distance of z miles
Then the amount of liters that would have costed xz/y
Hence amount of gallons saved =xz/y -xz/40 =xz(1/y -1/40)
2a)mileage=3771 km/lit =10652.35miles per gallon
b)Say fuel has density as 0.75 kg/lit
Hence 0.1Kg of fuel is 1/7.5 Lit =0.13333 Lit
Hence Distance travelled =3771*1/7.5 =502.8Km =312.43miles
