Question
What is the test that can be used if the data is not normally distributed, and compares the difference between what is observed and what is expected to occur by chance?
Regarding the correlation coefficient, select the most correct statement: (0.5 point)
a. It is a good indication of method imprecision
b. It is most commonly expressed as “b” in regression analysis
c. It is used to determine the slope and the intercept
d. Indicates the strength of relationship in regression analysis
e. none of the above
Explanation / Answer
Correlation coeffcient of two random variables X and Y is denoted by r. We know that if there is a perfect linear relationship between X and Y then r is either 1 or -1 depending the slope the line by which they are related. and if r=0 then we say that there is no linear relationship between X and Y.
So in one word r indicates the extent of linear relationship between two varaibles X and Y. In linear regression we always try to predict Y based on the linear equation Y= lpha + eta * X. + error. Now if r=1 then X and Y are perfectly linear related so error will be zero. and if r=0 then everything will be error. So r always indicates the strength of relationship in the regression analysis.
(c) is correct.
