Sleep researchers are interested in the association between REM sleep deprivation and work performance. Two groups of subjects who consent to participate in two nights of sleep testing are randomly chosen. On the nights of testing REM measures (EEG, EMG, EOG) are taken. Subjects in group one are allowed a total of four hours of sleep but they are awakened at various times throughout the 4 hour total sleep session. Subjects in group two also receive a total of four hours of sleep, but are not awakened. After the two nights of testing each group is required to complete a computerized assembly line task where their work performance on the task is recorded. Work performance is measured by number of mistakes made on a computerized assembly line task ranging from 0-50.
