Question
the table below provides information about 210 school leavers and their destination after leaving school
Determine the following probabilities that a person selected at random:
a.went into full time education
b. did not obtain a full time job
c. either went into full time education or went into full time job
d. left school at 16 and went into full time deucation
e. went into full time job, given they were selected fom the group who left school at 16
leave schoolat 16 yrs leave school at higheer age full time education 14 28 full time job 96 44 other 15 13Explanation / Answer
Following table shows the calculations:
(a)
Out of 210, 42 goes for full time education so the probability that a person selected at random went into full time education is
P(went into full time education) = 42 / 210 = 0.2
(b)
Out of 210, 42+28 = 70 did not ontain a full time job so the probability that a person selected at random did not obtain a full time job is
P(did not obtain a full time job) = 70 / 210 = 0.3333
(c)
Here we have
P(went into full time education) = 42 / 210 = 0.2
P(went into full time job) = 140 / 210 = 0.6667
Since a person can either went into full time education or went into full time job so teh required probabilty is
P(either went into full time education or went into full time job) = P(went into full time education) +P(went into full time job) = 0.8667
(d)
Out of 210, 14 person left school at 16 and went into full time deucation so required probability is 14 / 210 = 0.0667.
(e)
P(went into full time job and left school at 16) = 96/210
P(left school at 16) = 125/210
So the probability that went into full time job, given they were selected fom the group who left school at 16 is
P(went into full time job | left school at 16) = P(went into full time job and left school at 16) / P(left school at 16) = 0.1458
