Question

A pharmaceutical company is running tests to see how well (if at all) its new drug lowers cholesterol. A group of 10 subjects volunteer, where the total cholesterol in (mg/Dl) was measured at the beginning of the study, and after three months. The summary statistics for each group, as well as their dierence (initial - level after three months), follows:
Initial:   mean 205.70 std. dev 9.59

After: mean 200.20 std. dev 5.50

(Int - After): mean 7.83 std. dev 6.64
(a) Find the 95% condence interval for the true average dierence level of cholesterol in initial values vs after three months.

(b) Interpret the interval you found in (a) in terms of the problem.

(c) What is the appropriate hypothesis test to compare the interval in (a) to? State the appropriate null and alternative hypothesis.

(d) What can we say about the range p-value for the hypothesis test in (b)? Explain

Explanation / Answer

a. Go to Minitab> Stat> Basic statistics> 2 sample t and select 'Summarized data'. Enter 10, 205.70 and 9.59 corresponding to 'sample size', 'Mean' and 'Standard deviation' for Sample 1. Similarly enter data for 'Sample2'. Click OK. The 95% confidence interval is (-2.00,13)

b. Since the mean 7.83 is contained in the interval, therefore, accept null hypothesis that is new drug do not alter cholesterol.

c. H0: mu1=mu2 (new drug do not alter cholesterol after 3 months)

H1: mu1 not equal to mu2 (new drug alter cholesterol level).

d. The p value is 0.138

c.
