A researcher conducts a study with 100 University of Oregon students. Here is the design of the study.
Phase 1: She shows the students images of happy (30 images), sad (30 images), and angry faces (30 images) in a random order.
Phase 2: Then she shows a second set of 30 images with 10 happy face images, 10 sad face images, and 10 angry face images presented in random order. Some of these images were the exact same ones presented in Phase 1, and some of the images were new images that were not shown in Phase 1. After seeing each image, students were asked to write down ‘yes’ if that image appeared in the Phase 1 set of images, or ‘no’ if that image did not appear in the Phase 1 set of images.
