Question

Jose is a software salesman. Let y represent his total pay (in dollars). Let x represent the number of copies of English is Fun he sells. Suppose that x and y are related by the equation 2300+120x-y Answer the questions below. Note that a change can be an increase or a decrease. For an increase, use a positive number. For a decrease, use a negative number. What is the change in Jose's total pay for each copy of English is Fun he sells? What is Jose's total pay if he doesn't sell any copies of English is Fun?

Explanation / Answer

total pay = y

number of copies sold = x

y = 120x + 2300

part (a)

for each copy sold change in pay = difference between pay of (x+1) copies sold and (x) copies sold

ie [120(x+1) + 2300] - [120x + 2300]

= 120x + 120 + 2300 - 120x - 2300

= 120

part (b)

since y = 120x+ 2300

for no copies sold x = 0

therefore total pay = 120(0) + 2300

                              = $ 2300
