Question

1. The relation between the input of a person and the output of that person’s height is a function, because each person has exactly one height. However, the relation between the input of a person and the output of that’s person’s telephone number, is not a function because a single person might have several telephone numbers (home phone, cell phone, work phone, etc).

a) Describe a relation (give its input and output) in your life that is a function. Explain why it is a function.

b) Describe a relation (give its input and output) in your life that is not a function. Explain why it is not a function.

Explanation / Answer

a) the relation of a child and mother is a function

as a child can have only one mother ( biological )

so for each child there is one mother hence this relation is a function

input is child and mother is output

b) whereas if we reverse the situation

a mother can have many children

then it will not be a function

so here input is mother and output is children

but since the input is more than 1 it is not a function
