Question

The manager of a store that speciaizes in selling tea decides to experiment with a new blend. She will mix some Earl Grey tea that sells for S6 per pound with some Orange Pekoe tea that sells for $2 per pound to get 800 pounds of the new blend. The selling price of the new blend is to be $3 per pound, and there is to be no difference in revenue from selling the new blend versus selling the other types. How many pounds of the Earl Grey tea and Orange Pekoe tea are required? The blend should havepounds of Earl Grey andonds of Orange Pekoe.

Explanation / Answer

let amount of pounds of Earl Grey = x
let amount of pounds of Orange Pekoe = y
then we get equations
x+y=800...(i)
6x+2y=3*800
or 6x+2y=2400
or 3x+y=1200
or y=1200-3x...(ii)

plug (ii) into (i)

x+1200-3x=800
1200-2x=800
-2x=800-1200
-2x=-400
x=200

plug x=200 into (ii)

y=1200-3x=1200-3*200=1200-600=600

Hence the blend should have 200 pounds of Earl Grey and 600 pounds of Orange Pekoe.
