Question
The scatter plot shows the time spent watching TV, x, and the time spent doing homework, y, by each of 24 students last week. (a) Write an approximate equation of the line of best fit for the data. It doesn't have to be the exact line of best fit. (b) Using your equation from part (a), predict the time spent doing homework for a student who spends 12 hours watching TV. Note that you can use the graphing tools to help you approximate the line. (a) Write an approximate equation of the line of best fit. y = (b) Using your equation from part (a), predict the time spent doing homework for a student who spends 12 hours watching TV. hoursExplanation / Answer
Let the best fit line be through ( 4,24) and (24 , 4) . since when time spend watching tv increases time on home decreases. so it must be negative
slope = (4-24)/(28-4) = -0.833
Then the equation is y -y1 = m(x-x1)
= y - 24 = -0.8333 *(x-4)
y=-0.8333x+27.3332
b) if x = 12 , time for home work y = 17.3336hrs
