Question
3. Use the diagram below to answer the question that follows Bricks Air A piston is placed at the top of a cylinder filled with air As shown in the diagram above, students place a total of three 2 kg bricks, one at a time, on top of the piston and measure the volume of air in the cylinder. Their data are given in the table below Volume of Air in Cylinder (cubic centimeters) Mass on Piston (kg) 2.0 4.0 6.0 280 140 93 What would be the approximate volume of the air in cubic centimeters if students placed two more 2 kg bricks on top of the piston? [D 0Explanation / Answer
Solution:
For a fixed mass of gas, at a constant temperature, the product (pressure x volume) is a constant
Pressure x Volume = constant
p x V = constant
let area of piston is a
therefore pressue = F/a = (m) kg / cm^2
m = mass in kg
for the first case mass = 2 kg and volume = 280 cm^3
PV = (2/a) 280 = some constant (K) = K
560/a =K ..... (1)
again for second case
(4*140)/a = K
560/a = K
it is proved from these two can that PV = constant
after 6 kg brick student placed 2 more kg of bricks therefore
resulatant volume V
8V/a = K
Now divide this equaiton with first
560/8V = 1
V = 560 /8 = 70 cm^3
Answer: D: 70 is correct
