Question
A finite student came to class with a bag of candy bars to distribute to fellow students. The bag contained 5 KitKats and 4 other candy bars. Two students in the room each draw a candy bar in succession. Draw a tree diagram that represents the second student drawing a candy bar without the first bar being placed back In the bag. Determine the probability that the second bar is a Kit Kat given that the 1^st candy bar is eaten by the 1^st student. Draw a tree diagram that represents the first student draws a second candy bar after putting the first back in the bag because he didn't like it. Determine the probability that a student gets the Kit Kat that he wants after returning the 1^st choice to the bag.
Explanation / Answer
(a) propability that mary name will be selected
out of 40 one is mary so 40C1
out of total 100 one is selected 100C1
there fore propability is 40C1/100C1=40/100=4/10=2/5
propability that both mary and johns name is selected
mary is out of 40 so 40C1
johns is out of 60 so 60C1
total 2 students are selected out of 100 which is 100C2
there for propability is =(2*40*60)/(100*99)=16/33
(b) given they are 6 boys and 6 girls in group
mary amoung the is 6C1
total is only girls 40 so 40C1
propability mary selected =6/40=3/20
propablity amoung all is =6/100=3/50
johne selected is 6C1
mary as we know it is 6C1
out of total 100C2
propability is =(6*6*2)/(100*99)=6/825
