Question

Advisors for students in the Services office, receive an average of 220 non-spam emails every 8 hour working day. The advisors estimate that of these, approximately 150 need a reply by the end of the day. Over a period of time, the advisors find that the average number of unanswered emails in their inboxes that still need a reply is 5.

a) On average, how much time (in minutes) does it take for an advisor, at the Services office, to send a reply to an email that needs a response?

b) The Services office estimates that it takes an advisor on average 7 minutes to read an email that does not need to be replied. On average, how many non-spam emails that do not need a response are in the inboxes of the advisors waiting to be read?

c) On average, 60% of the incoming emails that require a reply are from students enrolled in one or more classes, this semester. The average time for an advisor to respond to these emails from students enrolled in classes is 10 minutes. How much time on average (in minutes) does it take an advisor to respond to the remaining emails, from students not enrolled in classes this semester, that still need a reply?

Explanation / Answer

Here total number of advisors are not mentioned..

Considering there are 5 advisors.

(a) It will take every advisor to read 44 emails each.

Talking about 1 advisor. He will take near about 11 min. (10.9min) to read an email. Out of which he has to reply to 30 each approximately. Thus if an advisor takes 7 minutes to read the complete email, he will reply it in 5.93 min.

i.e. 44 - 14 = 30

Here 14 are the emails which don't need to be replied.

Hence the time taken by the unanswered emails is 7 per mail which sums up to be 98 minutes

subtracting from total - 480-98 = 382

382 minutes taken to read and reply 30 emails.

Assuming 7 minutes taken to reply one email it will come 5.93 minutes to reply the same and one email is left unanswered.

(b) It can only be assumed. There is not any such calculation about it.

(c) Talking about the emails which are to answered, there are 30 emails taking 382 minutes for thw whole process, out of which 60% is of students who are enrolled in a class i.e. 180 minutes for 18 mails

Left are 12 emails are in 202 minutes. Hence it is the required answer.

Although there is some data not provided, but this can be a right way to solve this question.
