Question

Ok so I've just started Geometry, and right before the 1st unit test, there is several algebra review lessons. I'm totally blanking on how to do these problems! (x^2 is an exponent, and 1/2 is a fraction, for some reason it wouldn't let me enter exponents)

#1

Q: Name the property from algebra that applies to each step listed in solving the equations:

Solve: 2(x + 3) = 8

A:

2x + 6 = 8: the __________ postulate

2x = 2: the __________ property of equality (subtraction, multiplication, addition, division)

x = 1: the _________ property of equality (same as above)

#2

Q: Solve: x(x + 4) = x(x + 2) + 1

A:

x^2 + 4x = x^2 +

x^2 + 4x = x^2  + 1: the _________ postulate

4x = 2x + 1: the ________ property of equality

2x = 1: the __________ property of equality

x = 1/2: the __________ property of equality

#3

Q: Solve: x^2 + 6x + 2x + 12 = 0

A:

x(x + 6) + 2(x + 6) = 0: the ________ postulate

(x + 2)(x + 6) = 0: the _________ property of equality

x + 2 = 0 or x + 6 = 0: the _________ product property

x = -2 or x = -6: the ________ property of equality

If you could give me some help on how to work these problems out, I'd love you forever!! And if you CAN work a few of them out just so I'd have some examples, that'd be great too(: but either of those would be amazing!!

Explanation / Answer

WAY too many questions for 20 points... Here's a link to help with the properties: http://hotmath.com/hotmath_help/topics/properties-of-equality.html
