Question

I'm doing a research essay for a little extra credit in algebra and I need some help. I came across Nesselman in my research about how he divided algebra up into basically three sections. The rhetorical stage, the syncopated, and the symbolic stage. There was this site where it gave clearer definitions about the first two, but I couldn't quite grasp what the symbolic part truly meant. If someone could help me with this I would be externally great-full. :) If I could get an easy definition that would be fab! But if you get something from a website even that would be great too. That way I would be able to quote it and everything. :P

Thanks:)

Explanation / Answer

Symbolic algebra is simply algebra that uses mainly symbols. Letters of the alphabet were picked in order to stand for concrete numbers with no distinction between knowns and unknowns.
