Question

Hi!
So I am doing this problem and I have done it numerous times, either the same way or a different way.

1 1/2 +2 3/8 + 12/24 + 9/10- 2/6

I added brackets to make the problem look like this

(1 1/2 +2 3/8 + 12/24) + (9/10- 2/6)

Is this right or is this tototally wrong????

I understand the process of fractions and how you must have a common D and all that. But the numbers get big (fast) in this problem. One time I even got a negative number...somehow. I got out my scientific Calculator and checked my work after I was frusterated with getting a new answer and/or getting stuck.....The calculator said my final answer should be 4 113/120. But the problem I find is f you have parenthesis with the plus sign in the midle, dont you changethe signs to the opposite in sidethe parenthesis??

(1 1/2 +2 3/8 + 12/24) + (9/10- 2/6)

Meaning I would now have my problem be this.
(1 1/2 + 2 3/8 + 12/24) + (9/10 + 2/6) So I switched the signs. Is this right or wrong??? I know this must be completely confussing, but I am basically asking how to start and finish the entire problem. Thank You Hi!

Explanation / Answer

You did it right. With addition and subtraction you just work the problem from left to right. Add the first 4 then subtract the 2/6 from that. I got the same answer as you 4 113/120.
