Question
Robinson : w =108 + 3.7 h
Miller: w = 117 + 3.0h
where w is weight ( in pounds) and h is height over 5 feet ( in inches).
a) interpret the slope of each model
b) If a man is 5 feet and 6 inches tall, what does each model predict his weight to be?
c) if a man weights 140 pounds what does each model predict his weight to be?
Answers:
a) slope: robinson = 3.7, miller = 3.0
b) robinson 130.2 pounds, miller 135 pounds
c) robinson 5 feet 9 inches, miller 5 feet 8 inches.
can you please explian breifly how to approach the answers b) and c)
waiting for reply.
Thank you very much.
Explanation / Answer
b) So if a man is 5’6” then he is 6” over 5 feet and our h=6. Now we are ready to plug into our equations: Robinson: w = 108 + 3.7(6) w = 108 + 22.2 w = 130.2 lbs. Miller: w = 117 + 3(6) w = 117 + 18 w = 135lbs. c) Now they tell us the weight and we have to solve for the height. We know that w = 140 Robinson: 140 = 108 + 3.7h Subtract 108 from both sides: 32 = 3.7h Divide both sides by 3.7: h = 8.6486 So our man is about 5’8” Miller: 140 = 117 + 3h Subtract 117 from both sides: 23 = 3h Divide both sides by 3: h = 7.666667 So our man is about 5”8’ I hope that this was helpful.
