Question

I was given a problem that says.. Makes a data table first, then graph the following functions in the same corrdinate plane : A) f(x)=x2, B) f(x)=x2 + 2, and C) f(x) = x2-2. What do you notice about the graph? My question is how do you graph theses ? I was given a problem that says.. Makes a data table first, then graph the following functions in the same corrdinate plane : A) f(x)=x2, B) f(x)=x2 + 2, and C) f(x) = x2-2. What do you notice about the graph? My question is how do you graph theses ?

Explanation / Answer

Here is what a table will look like for the first one. x f(x)=x^2     0 f(0)=0^2=0 1 f(1)=1^2=1 2 f(2)=2^2=4 -1 f(-1)=(-1)^2=1 -2 f(-2)=(-2)^2=4 So, plot coordinates on xy-axis. (0,0), (1,1), (2,4), (-1,1), (-2,4). This will look like a parabola, opening upward, and minimum at the origin. B) will be the same graph but shifted up +2. When x=0, y=2. (0,2) is the bottom of the parabola. C) f(x)=x^2-2 will be the same parabola shifted down -2. When x=0, y=-2. (0,-2) is the bottom of the graph. Hope this helps.
