Question

Please create a problem with all of these charachteristics especially cancellation of the denominator. Please include each step. When solving a rational equation, it is ok to remove the denominator by multiplying both sides by the lcd because the general rule states what you do to one side of the equation you have to do to the other side as well.  When you simplify a rational expression there is one side and not two so you can't multiply both sides.  The numerator and the donominator can be multiplied by the same term as long as it is not zero.  By multiplying the numerator and the denominator by a number, the fraction can be given the same denominator and then you can combine the numerator.

Explanation / Answer

# Solve the following equation: (x - 1) / 15 = 2 / 5 To solve this, I can convert to a common denominator of 15: (x - 1) / 15 = 6 / 15 Now I can compare the numerators: x – 1 = 6 x = 7 Note, however, that I could also have solved this by multiplying through on both sides by the common denominator: [ (x - 1) / 15] (15/1) = (2/5) (15/1) x – 1 = 2(3) x – 1 = 6 x = 7
