Question
determine the equation in standard form for the line passingthrough (4,2) and parallel to the horizontal line through(1,-2)my solution - step 1
since the line is horizontal therefore y = k
y = -2
y + 2 = 0
step 2
since both lines are parallel therefore m1 =m2 and from step 1 we know that slope is 0 since theline is horizontal therefore use point slope form:
y - y0 = m(x - x0)
y - 2 = 0(x - 4)
y -2 = 0 >>>>solution
okay my solution is correct but am i using the right approach ormethod? or am i making things too complicated... because the answerin the book is much simpler. which is:
so the line is horizontal through (4,2) and the equation is y = 2,in standard form the equation is
y - 2 = 0
Explanation / Answer
You do not need to go through all of those steps because the line is horizontal, meaning there is no slope, and no x value. To set up the equation for the line, all you need is the y coordinate since the line will be a y= (horizontal). Again, because there is no slope all you need to do is set y equal to the y coordinate.
