Question
The equation y-0.23x=0 relates the cost of operating a car tothe humber of miles driven, where x is the number of miles drivenand y is hte cost. a. graph the equation and determine the domain and range b. explain what the x- and - intercepts represent c. explain what 0.23 represents The answers are the following, but how did the textbook getit, ESPECIALLY the first answer a. y=0.23x (you don't need to graph, but explain theequation) b. when no miles have driven, there is no cost c. represents $0.23 per mile HELP PLEASE The equation y - 0.23x=0 relates the cost of operating a car tothe humber of miles driven, where x is the number of miles drivenand y is hte cost. a. graph the equation and determine the domain and range b. explain what the x - and - intercepts represent c. explain what 0.23 represents The answers are the following, but how did the textbook getit, ESPECIALLY the first answer a. y=0.23x (you don't need to graph, but explain theequation) domain {x|x in R and x > = 0} Range {y|y in R and y > = 0} ...where do the symbols come from, likethe E - shaped one and the R?? b. when no miles have driven, there is no cost c. represents $0.23 per mile HELP PLEASEExplanation / Answer
a) They just put in slope-intercept form y = 0.23x. It means thesame thing but in a different format. = exists for in math notation y = .23x is just a line so the domain is x R (domain is allreal numbers; no restrictions on x-values). Since x = number of miles, conceptually you can't have negativemiles so x > 0. If your teacher is being picky, x > 0 should be the onlyanswer for domain since you shouldn't be getting negative x values. You can plug in negative x-values and get values returned, but theydon't mean anything.. y = .23x is just a line so the range is y R (range is allreal numbers; no restrictions on y-values). Since y = cost, conceptually you can't have negative operating costsince that would produce a "double negative" (You can get negativecost in other problems if you are accounting for a loss but that'snot what cost means here.) Again, if your teacher is being picky, y > 0 should bethe only answer for range since you shouldn't be getting negative yvalues. You can plug in negative y-values and get values returned, but they don't mean anything. b) x-intercept means y = 0 in the form (x, 0) so that means themiles for which operating cost is 0, which is essentially for 0miles. y-intercept means x = 0 in the form (0, y) so that means theoperating cost when 0 miles has been driven, which is essentially0 So (0,0) is both the x and y intercept. c) Right, slope is cost for every mile driven (miles driven beingthe x) so .23 = 23 cents given that cost is in Americandollars.
