Question
A satellite measures blackbody infrared radiation beingemitted over the ocean and finds that for an area 10km x 10kmthe amount of energy being emitted is 4.17 x1010W. find: The surface temperature of the ocean( inoC).Assume the emissivity of the ocean is 1.0. just a curiosity; shouldn't this be posted under "physics"? The relevant formula is Stefan-Boltzmann law: H = AeT4 where H = rate of heat radiation = 4.17 x 1010 W A = area = 10 km x 10 km = 108 m2 e = emissivity = 1 = stefan-boltzmann constant = 5.67 x 10-8W/m2K4 So you can find T (caution: T will come out in Kelvin. you have toconvert it to Celsius.) Hope this helps!
