Explanation / Answer

Total number of students = number on baketball, tennis, or noton either. Since some students are on both teams if wesimply added up all the number is would be too high because wewould've counted some students twice. In order to account forthis we need to subtract the number of students who play on bothteams, so the answer is: # of students on basketball team + #of students on tennis - # of students on both + # of students + 18 - 11 + 14 = 36 Here's an easier example if you're still having troubleunderstanding: lets say we had students: a,b,c,d,e and we knew that2 played on the basketball team, 2 played on the tennis team andone played on both, and 2 played on neither (so we wouldn'tknow which was which but for clarity's sake we'll say a,b onthe basketball team and b,c on the tennis team and d,e onneither). Then you can see that if we just added the numberon both teams we would get 7, which is incorrect (because wecounted b twice). To make up for counting somestudents twice we can add the total number and then subtractthe number that play on both (in this case only 1, studentb). Hope this helps! =)
