Question

Greetings,

I have trouble with arithmetic calculation that has to be done byhand (but the answers are in multiple choice).

The calculation is: (.791/58)*1000.

The solution set stated that it was okay to round up, sonow the example become (.80/60)*1000 to make thecalculation smoother.

The correct answer is either 13.3 or 13.6(depending how the rounding got).

I am lost on how to do this in the quickest and simplest manner. Iwill rate high.

What I did is below:

(8.0 E -1)/(6 E 1) * E3

Then I got

4/3 E -2

Then I tried to divide 4/3 and got 133, but wasn't sure where thedecimal went. And even if I guessed 13.3, how would I account forthe E3?

Explanation / Answer

Typically you do not round up until you have a solution. So I would take the .791 X 1000 so move the decimal 3 placesand you get 791. Then divide 58 into 791 and you get 13.63 so rounding to one decimal place would get you an answer of13.6
