Question
It is observed than in a college, 40% of the freshmen flunk out, 10% remain freshmen while the rest become sophomores; of the sophomores, 30% flunk out, and 60% become juniors, the rest remaining sophomores; of the juniors, 70% advance up while only 20% flunk out, and finally of the seniors, 80% graduate and 10% remain seniors. One may assume that once a student flunks out, he/she stays out. Give a transition matrix A for the process in the form: [ I 0 ] [ X Y ] I: identity 0: number 0 where I and Y are square matrices (not necessarily of the same size). I got as far as putting the data into a matrix form but don't know how to put it in the format given. [ 40 10 50 ] [ 30 10 60 ] [ 20 10 70 ] [ 10 10 80 ]Explanation / Answer
