Question
C. Critique the graph using the principles and terminology of Tufte (specifically: showing the data accurately and honestly, minimizing data-ink, and avoiding chart junk). What is good about the graph? What is not good about it? Be specific!
UNEMPLOYMENT RATE UNDER PRESIDENT OBAMA 10% 9.5%| 9.0% 990 , , 8.9% 8.5% 8% 9.1% 9.2% 9.1% 9.1% 9.1% 9.0% 8.6% AN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV 2011 NEWS SOURCE: BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS l radio AR WAR AND A TROOP WITHDRAWAL AT THE E NAS FUT 2,292.50Explanation / Answer
(a) What is good about the graph:
The Unemployment rates (y values) for the varous months (x values) are unambigously and clearly marked on the graph with exact numbers written on the points.
(b) What is not good about the graph:
The y axis does not start from 0. For actual representation of data, it is mandetory that the y axis should start from 0.
We note that the graph satistifies Tufte's 6 Principles of Graphical Integrity:
1. Representation of numbers match the true proportion.
2. Labeling is clear and detailed.
3. Design do not vary for some ulterior motive, show only data variation.
4. To represnt money, well known units are best. Here since no money is mensioned, this priciple will not apply here.
5. The number of dimensions represnted are ithe same as the number of dimensions in the data.
6. Represtations do not imply unintended context.
