Question

3. In the leukemia study, they also kept track of who passed away during the study, often noted as a "censored" observation an observation that couldn't continue to be tracked (another example would be a patient who moved away during the study with no forwarding address). Below we have the two-way contingency table for Censored (Yes/No) and the Treatment Group (6-Merc/Control). 6-Mere Control No Yes 12 9 0 21 (a) Use your table to calculate the overall frequencies of the Censored variable. How many patients passed away during the study (i.e., were censored)? How many patients were alive at the end of the study? (b) Given your table, do you think there is a relationship between which treatment group and whether or not the patient passed away? Why/why not? (c) The shaded mosaic plot for your table is below: . Why do we only see three boxes? Where do we have more than expected (if there were no relationship)? . Using your mosaic plot, do you think there is a relationship between which treatment group and whether or not the patient passed away? Why/why not?

Explanation / Answer

Answer to part a)

Total patients who were censored and passed away = 9+21 = 30

Total alive patients = 12+0 = 12

.

Answer to part b)

Yes, in the treatment group out of 21 people , 12 were alive

Whereas in the control group there is 0 alive person post study

Thus it lets us know that the treatment is effective

.

Answer to part c)

The plot shows only three columns because number of alive people in the control group is 0. So that box disappears from the mosaic plot

The more than expected part comes on the right side of the mosaic chart where all 21 patients in the control group are censored

Yes, definitely there is a relation between treatment and number of people censored

We can observe that in the right side it is purely white shade indicating all patients censored under the control group

Whereas on the left side of mosaic plot there is blue and white both, infact the proportion of blue is more than the white proportion on the left side, indicating that more than half of the patients in the treatment group are saved and alive. Hence the treatment is effective in avoiding censoring.
