Question

Question 1 /0.1 A recent study reported that a history of serious head traumas may be a key factor in the development of Alzheimer's disease. To study the effect of serious head traumas on the development of the disease, a sample of subjects age 65 or older was selected. Half the subjects had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and half had experienced occasional memory loss but had not been diagnosed with the disease. To determine the history of serious head traumas (number of head injuries involving loss of consciousness), the subjects' medical records were reviewed. The results of the study indicated that those with Alzheimer's had a significantly higher number of head injuries involving loss of consciousness. The article which presented the results cautioned that the findings are only preliminary, stating that well-known factors associated with the development of Alzheimer's, such as genetics and sex, were not examined in the study. This is an observational study because 1) A treatment is not imposed 2 Two groups are compared

Explanation / Answer

(1)

In this case, this is an observational study because a treatment is not imposed. No factor is being controlled in anyway, the two groups are just compared for their medical histories. If some factor had been controlled and subjected on the patients, then it might have become an experiment. But this is an observational study.

(2)

In this study, explanatory variable is the serious head traumas, because those who had it showed greater chances to develop the disease.

Response variable is the development of Alzheimer's disease.
