Question

It the 1980s, it was generally believed that congenital abnormalities affected about 8% of a large nation's children. Some people believe that the increase in the number of chemicals in the environment has led to an increase in the incidence of abnormalities. Arecent study examined 395 randomly selected children and found that 57 of them showed signs of an abnormality. Is this strong evidence that the risk has increased? (Consider a P-value of around 5% to represent reasona evidence.) Complete parts a through f a) Write appropriate hypotheses. Let p be the proportion of children with genetic abnormalities. Choose the correct answer below. A. Ho: p-o08 vs. HA: p > 0.08 C. Ho:p 0.08 vs. HA P 0.08 E. Ho: p-0.1443 vs. HA p>0.1443 B. D. OF. Ho:p 0.08 vs. HA:p#0.08 HOP#0.1443 vs. HA-pc0.1443 Ho: p:0, 1443 vs. HA: p#0.1443 b) Check the necessary assumptions. Which of the following are satisfied? Select all that apply. A. The sample is random. B. Less than 10% of the population was sampled. C. The data are independent. D. There are more than 10 successes and 10 failures. c) Perform the mechanics of the test. What is the test statistic? z(Round to two decimal places as needed.) What is the P-value? P-value (Round to three decimal places as needed.) d) Explain what the P-value means in this context. Choose the correct answer below. Click to select your answers).

Explanation / Answer

Null hypothesis is H0: p=0.08

Alternate hypothesis H1: p>0.08

So its answer is A.

Solution(b)

395 samples choose random so this sample is random and data is independent.

Solution(3)

Z =(0.1443-0.08)/sqrt(0.08×0.92/395)

Z = 0.0643/sqrt(0.000186)

Z =0.0643/0.0136381

Z = 4.7147

From z table we found that p-value =0.00001

And alpha =0.05

We can see that p-value is less than alpha value so we will reject the null hypothesis against the alternate hypothesis.

And there is strong evidence that risk has increased.
