Question

ron ie previous exercise. DECAY 2.34 Internet use and babies. The World Bank colleets data on many variables related to world development for countries throughout the world. Two of these are Internet use, in number of users per 100 people, and birthrate, in births per 1000 people.15 Figure 2.13 is a scatterplot of birthrate versus Internet use for the 106 countries that have data available for both variables. Iin INBIRTH (a) Describe the relationship between these two variables. (b) A friend looks at this plot and concludes that using the Internet will decrease the number of babies born Write a short paragraph explaining why the association seen in the scatterplot does not provide a reason to draw this conclusion.

Explanation / Answer

Answers:

Part a

From given JMP output for the required scatterplot, it is observed that there is a considerable negative association or linear relationship or correlation exists between the two variables such as internet users per 100 people and births per 1000 people for different countries. It is observed that if the number of internet users increases, the births decreases.

Part b

We know that the correlation always does not show the causation. Although if we get some relationship exists between two variables, this would not imply that one variable is a cause of another or vice-versa. There may be a presence of some confounding variables which are responsible for these types of correlations. Actually, an increasing number of internet users shows the increasing rate of literacy and increasing literacy results in well family planning’s and that’s why the rate of birth decreases. This means, there is a confounding variable literacy rate. There is no direct relationship exists between these two variables, but due to a confounding variable there is an indirect relationship exists between these two variables such as internet users per 100 people and births per 1000 people. Therefore we cannot provide a reason to draw the conclusion about the relationship between two variables as given in the scatterplot.
