Question
6. occupational prestige is a statistic developed by sociologists to measure the status of one's occupation. Occupational prestige is also a component of what sociologists call socioeconomic status, a composite measure of one's status in society. On average, people with more education tend to have higher occu pational prestige than people with less education. We investigate this using the 2010 GSS variable PRESTG80 and the Explore procedure to generate the selected SPSS output shown in Figure 5.15. Figure 5.15 Descriptive Statistics for Occupational Prestige Score by Highest Degree Earned Statistic PRESTG80 40.59 40.00 11.419 17 75 58 17 50.95 51.00 12.930 23 75 52 23 High School Diploma RS OCCUPAONAL PRESIGE SCORE (1980) Mean Median Std. Deviation Minimumm Maximum Range Interquartile Range Mean Median Std. Deviation Minimum Maximum Range Interquartile Range Bachelor's Degree a. Note that SPSS supplies the IQR, the median, and the minimum and maximum values of each group. Looking at the values of the mean and median, do you think the distribution of prestige is skewed for respondents with a high school diploma? For respondents with a bachelor's degree? Why or why not? Explain why you think there is more variability of prestige for either group, or why the variability of prestige is similar for the two groups. b.Explanation / Answer
a)
for the Hogh School Diploma,
mean=40.59
median=40
For the Bachelor's degree,
mean=50.95
median=51
For the Bachelor's degree, mean and median are almost same. There is only difference of 0.05 .Which means that the distribution of the prestige ia not skewed for respondents with a bachelor's degree.
For the high school diploma,mean is slightly larger than median.i.e. mean- median is positive. This indicate that there is positive skewness.
b) If we the standard deviation, for high school diploma it is 11.419 and for bachelor's degree it is 12.93
Which shows that there is more variability of prestige for bachelor's degree than the high school diploma.
