Random Variable: A random variable X is a mapping from sample space to Real numbers, this means that a random variable assigns to each outcome of a sample space, a real number.

A random variable can be of two types : Quantitative and Qualitative .

Quantitative variable can be discrete or continuous. Discrete Random variables take discrete values like 0,1,2.. whereas Continuous Random Variable takes values in an interval of real line.

a) The number of free attempts can vary form 0, 1,2.. and so on. So, the number of free attempts is a discrete random variable.

b) The number of points in a basket ball is also a discrete random variable like 0,1, 2 etc.

c) Political party affiliation is not a random variable since it is not being mapped to numerical values.

d) The height of a randomly selected giraffe is a continuous random variable because it takes values in a interval, for example the height of a giraffe can take a value like 4.3 metres etc.

e) The number of hits on a website can vary from 0 to 1,2,..and so it takes discrete whole numbers as values. Therefore, this is a discrete random variable.

f) The time required to download a file can be 1 hour or 1.25 hours ..therefore it can take values in an interval. So, time taken to download a file is a continous random variable.
